Project Introduction

The Transportation (Cooperative Education) program is jointly offered by the School of Traffic and Transportation of Beijing Jiaotong University and the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands
BJTU & TU Delft Joint Program in Traffic and Transportation is jointly offered by the School of Traffic and Transportation at Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) and the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). It is the first joint bachelor’s program in Traffic and Transportation approved by Ministry of Education, China among universities in Beijing [MOE Approval No. JWZH [2017] 5]. Each year, the program admits 60 students nationwide through China’s unified university admission process.
BJTU Traffic and Transportation major has a profound academic heritage and is one of BJTU’s oldest, most distinctive, and strongest disciplines. Its partner, TU Delft, widely known as the “MIT of Europe,” consistently ranks among the top three universities worldwide in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, and other disciplines in the QS World University Rankings (2022–2024).
Building on the long-standing academic strengths and research foundations of both universities in the field of transportation, the program integrates internationally advanced concepts to develop a systematic and interdisciplinary curriculum. It emphasizes the deep integration of artificial intelligence technologies with transportation systems, while focusing on fundamental competencies, innovation awareness, and engineering practice. The program is committed to cultivating future transportation leaders equipped with cross-cultural communication skills, strong innovative potential, global perspectives, and international competitiveness.
Project Overview
Program Advantages
BJTU & TU Delft Joint Program in Traffic and Transportation is built upon the strong academic foundations and close collaboration between BJTU and TU Delft. Guided by the philosophy of collaborative education, frontier-led development, student-centered learning, and full-process support, the program offers an international, diversified, and cutting-edge training system. By integrating the strengths of both universities and bringing together a high-level faculty team from China and the Netherlands, the program provides world-class teaching platforms, frontier-oriented curriculum content, and comprehensive developmental support. It empowers students with solid academic foundations, global perspectives, and extensive opportunities for international exchange and practical experience, preparing them to become outstanding transportation professionals with strong expertise, international vision, cross-cultural competencies, and innovative capabilities.
Strong Partnership to Build World-Class Platform
Leveraging the long-standing academic strength and research resources of BJTU and TU Delft in the transportation field, the program integrates the two universities’ strengths in smart mobility, transportation planning, artificial intelligence, and related areas. It establishes a multidisciplinary, research-integrated, and internationally oriented education system. Supported by both universities’ platforms, students gain access to world-leading educational environments, research opportunities, and diverse pathways for academic and personal development.
High-Caliber Faculty and Collaborative Teaching
Core courses are jointly taught by faculty members from both institutions, with more than one-third delivered by senior faculty from TU Delft. The program brings together domain experts and active researchers to form a high-level instructional team. Through deep collaboration in curriculum design, teaching organization, and learning assessment, the program effectively integrates Eastern and Western educational philosophies and enhances teaching quality as well as students’ overall competencies.
English Instruction with Supportive Transition
Core professional courses are taught entirely in English. During the first two years, BJTU faculty provide parallel academic tutoring and language support to help students achieve breakthroughs in both English proficiency and disciplinary knowledge. This phased approach helps students adapt to an international learning environment and builds a solid foundation for future graduate studies or global career development.
Dual-Supervisor System to Strengthen Research Training
During the final-year thesis stage, the program implements a dual-supervisor model, with faculty from both BJTU and TU Delft jointly responsible for topic guidance, process supervision, and final evaluation. Thesis topics align closely with industry trends and academic frontiers, emphasizing the integration of theory and practice. Students are systematically trained in problem identification, research methodology, and innovation-oriented thinking.
Frontier Curriculum Aligned with Industry Trends
Reflecting the “Transportation + Intelligence” development trend, the curriculum offers two tracks: Railway Transportation and Urban Transportation. Courses cover key areas such as transportation organization, traffic planning, intelligent scheduling, travel behavior analysis, and transportation system modeling. The curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary integration and systems thinking, equipping students with strong adaptability to emerging technologies and new industry developments.
Broad Prospects for Graduate Studies and Career Development
Since the establishment of the program, graduates have demonstrated outstanding academic and professional potential. Approximately 41% of students pursue master’s degrees at QS Top 50 universities worldwide, while 16% continue their studies at top domestic institutions such as Tsinghua University and Peking University. Other graduates join leading organizations, including national railway groups, international consulting companies, and multinational mobility technology companies, embarking on careers in research, policy analysis, operations management, and related fields.
Comprehensive Scholarships to Encourage Excellence
The program offers a wide range of dedicated scholarships supporting students’ development at different stages, including awards for academic excellence, significant progress, IELTS achievement, and postgraduate admissions. These highly competitive and generous scholarships motivate students to strive for excellence and pursue continuous improvement.
Full-Process Support for Student Growth
To ensure smooth progression within the dual-institution educational environment, the program provides comprehensive academic, personal, and career support, covering academic tutoring, living services, psychological support, graduate school advising, and career planning. A positive, supportive, and aspirational learning atmosphere is cultivated to help students achieve holistic growth and long-term success.
